How to Play the Chameleon Game
The Chameleon Game takes about a minute to learn and a lifetime to master. Here is the complete guide — rules, setup, turn order, and pro tips — so your group can start playing in seconds.
The Basics: What You Need to Play
Before the accusations start, here is everything you need to set up a round of the Chameleon Game.
Players
The game works best with 3 to 20 players. It scales smoothly from a quick trio to a full party.
One Device or Many
Play pass-and-play on a single phone, or have everyone open the link on their own device. Both work perfectly.
A Secret Word
Use the free generator to pick a secret word and a category. Everyone but the Chameleon will see it.
No Equipment
No board, no cards, no app to install. If you can open a browser, you have everything you need.
How to Play, Step by Step
One full round of the Chameleon Game takes about five minutes from setup to reveal.
1. Generate a Secret Word
Open the generator and pick a category. Each player, in turn, briefly sees the device to receive the secret word — except one player, who sees nothing. That player is the Chameleon.
2. Give Clues in a Circle
Starting from a random player, everyone says one word or short phrase that relates to the secret word. The Chameleon must bluff a believable clue without giving themselves away.
3. Discuss and Deduce
After everyone has given a clue, the group discusses. Who was too vague? Who was suspiciously specific? Players share suspicions and defend themselves.
4. Vote for the Chameleon
The group votes on who they believe is the Chameleon. The player with the most votes is exposed. If they were the Chameleon, the group wins; if not, the real Chameleon escapes.
